Information
Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park is an ancient structure with unique architecture style. Best known for its use of laterite and traditional Thai art, the place is designated as UNESCO heritage site in 1991 along with Sukhothai Historical Park and Si Satchanalai Historical Park.
Almost every ancient structure inside the historical park are Buddhist places of worship, for example:
Wat Phra Kaew: This is the biggest royal temple and located in the center of the town just like Maha That Temple during Sukhothai and Phra Si Sanphet Temple during Ayutthaya. Documents on ancient legends mentioned that the Emerald Buddha and Phra Buddha Sihing had been in Kamphaeng Phet before and may have been placed in Wat Phra Kaew.
Wat Phra That: These majestic round or bell-shaped pagodas located within the temple boundary are made of bricks and placed over the diverse-layered octagon foundation.
Wat Phra Non: Inside the temple, laterite is the main construction material as seen from the pavilion whose prayer hall's base is made of octagon columns while the monastery relies on one laterite column only. Its wall makes use of the ordered laterite as wind-break. The main pagoda meanwhile comes in the bell-shape structure and is placed on the octagon foundation.
Wat Phra Si Iriyabot: Its main construction is the monastery built on the grand Taksin foundation with the mandapa located in the back serving as the main pagoda of this temple. The decorated four-side mandapa sees a square column supporting the roof and outward-protruding corners on all four sides. Statues of Buddha in various postures were once placed on each side but now only the Standing Buddha Image remains enshrined on the south side of the wall.
Wat Chang Rop: The main attraction of this temple is the majestic bell-shaped main pagoda. Its grand square foundation is decorated with 68 stucco half-sized elephant sculpture, with stairs located in the center of all four sides to reach the upper ground or Taksin Ground.
Also, the place is home to the Shiva Shrine which is the only Hindu shrine in the historical park. Currently the only remaining structure is the base of the rectangular building made of laterite. The structure used to house the bronze Statue of Shiva with the name of Chao Phraya Sri Thammasokraj engraved on the base.
