Information
Located along Chao Phraya riverside near Santi Chai Prakan Park and Phra Sumen Fort on Phra Athit Road, Ban Chao Phraya, the Hip roof edifice was once the residential building in the palace of His Royal Highness Prince Navaratna Krom Muen Sathit Thamrong Sawat, the son of His Majesty King Pinklao, who was the viceroy of the Kingdom of Siam during the reign of His Majesty King Mongkut (Rama IV)
After the decease of Prince Naowarat in 1890, Ban Chao Phraya was left unoccupied until His Majesty King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) decided to utilize Ban Chao Phraya as the accommodations for state guests. Once this place was provided as the residence for Italian engineer who oversaw the construction of Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall. Ban Chao Phraya was later renovated and reassigned to be the Provincial Police Department as well as the official residence of the police chief at that time. Afterwards, when the Provincial Police Department was combined with the Metropolitan Ministry, the place was again left unused.
In 1916, His Majesty King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) bestowed Ban Chao Phraya and its land to His Highness Prince Khamrob, the grandson of King Rama II, after he assumed the position of the first Director-General of Thailand’s Metropolitan Police Department.
Prince Khamrob resided in Ban Chao Phraya until his death in 1939 before his heirs,
M.R. Seni Pramoj and M.R. Kukrit Pramoj, inherited the palace and passed on to his grandson,
M.L. Usni Pramoj. Unfortunately, none of the heirs had resided in Ban Chao Phraya; the building
was consequently rent out for the productive usage. Since then, the place had served as the offices of several important organizations.
Located in the historical area of Rattanakosin Island, which is known as the dream destination of many foreigners, Ban Chao Phraya with the antique and exquisite architecture has been renovated by PTT group to serve as the Arts Gallery @ Ban Chao Phraya, the artistic exhibition space that displays the rewarded artworks from PTT Art Competitions as well as the precious artistic works by the famous artists and the young blood.
Besides, the Arts Gallery @ Ban Chao Phraya together with Sarn Palung Social Enterprise Company Ltd. (PTTSE) mutually establish Café Amazon for Chance with the aims to offer chances, income and social equality for the hearing impaired baristas. The surrounding area of Arts Gallery
@ Ban Chao Phraya has been beautifully restored and utilized as the activity space, the educational center and the local products and PTT group’s communities products market.
