Information
In 1932, Dr. Chai Chainuvati graduated with his degree in modern medicine from Tongji German Medical School (currently Tongji University) in Shanghai, China. Dr. Chai moved back to Bangkok thereafter to open a clinic called ‘Berlin Dispensary’, which was a pioneering private clinic in Charoenkrung-Yaowarat neighbourhood. During those times, Dr. Chai had given free treatment to poor patients who could not afford to pay medical fees, plus free bus fares back home sometimes. With his kind heart, skillful diagnosis and accurate medication, Dr. Chai was well known and respected by people in the neighbourhood.
Even though Berlin Dispensary no longer exists, the venue has been well kept to commemorate Dr. Chai and nowadays was transformed into Berlin Pharmaceutical Museum to allow the latter generations to study his inspiring life. Berlin Pharmaceutical Museum consists of 3 sections.
First, the foyer welcomes visitors with the exhibition on his stages of life in a chronological order, ranging from the migration of Dr. Chai’s family from China, different ages of his life to the establishment of Berlin Dispensary. All of which are being portrayed along with medical devices, important documents and family photos. Next exhibition is the simulation of various facilities within Berlin Dispensary, including examination room with his journal entry and pharmacy, for visitors to envision the bygone medication procedures. Last part is the explanation of how Berlin Dispensary has transformed from a clinic to a manufacturer and distributor of medicine that meets international standards under the name ‘Berlin Pharmaceutical Industry Co., Ltd.’
