Established as the scientific educational centre on tropical diseases, Discovery Museum of Tropical Diseases celebrated the 55th anniversary of the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University. The 163-square metre museum offers concise and advanced exhibition created with 4D technology, including light, sound, visual and sensation. Discovery Museum of Tropical Diseases is divided into 6 zones as follows:
Zone A Background
Background of the Faculty of Tropical Medicine is delivered via audio-visual presentation, which comprises:
• Why is there Faculty of Tropical Medicine?
• The six deans and academic distinctions from the beginning to present
Zone B Origin of Gnathostome
The past discoveries of the Faculty for which have benefited global academic circle – ‘the World’s first discovery of gnathostome life cycle’.
Zone C Origin of Opisthorchis viverrini
The exhibition explains the life cycle of Opisthorchis viverrini to educate students and general public. Visitor will become aware of the danger of Opisthorchis viverrini and risks in the consumption of uncooked food.
Zone D Discoveries of Gnathostome, Opisthorchis viverrini and Malaria
Accomplishment and knowledge achieved from studies, research and findings of Faculty of Tropical Medicine that pose impacts on humankind and the society of tropical disease. The presentation will be rotated in accordance with the classification of diseases.
• Diseases caused by protozoa, i.e. malaria with Anopheles mosquito as the carrier, symptoms, complications, treatment and prevention.
• Diseases caused by Helminths, i.e. Opisthorchis viverrini, Gnathostome, infections, bladder cancer, prevention and treatment.
Zone E Origin of Malaria
The model simulates the environment of forest, which is the origin of mosquito that causes malaria in Thailand, including Anopheles mosquito. In addition, knowledge on the life cycle of Anopheles mosquito and malaria prevention guidelines is delivered.
Zone F International Collaboration
The exhibition highlights the collaboration with foreign organisations and initiation of networks
