Information
Ja Thawee Folk Museum displays a collection of tools and equipment representing the local lifestyle of Phitsanulok Province’s residents. Inside, it comprises a garden of various Thai plants along with the buildings serving as information and exhibition zones. The exhibition area is classified into three main buildings of:
First building is a wood structure constructed by the former owner after the fire incident in Phitsanulok’s market area during the pioneer era. The place displays vintage photos telling the local history of the Province such as administrative visits to the town in the past, the 1957 fire incident, scenery of the town of Phitsanulok before and after the Great Fire, specialties of Phitsanulok and major communities in the past.
Second building is a two-level wood structure. Built in a contemporary style around 50 years ago, the place displays local tools and equipment used in the past. The collection gathers products from every region of Thailand and is categorized by their usage. It however pays significant attention to the items from the lower northern region consisting of Phisanulok, Phitchit, Nakhon Sawan, Kamphaeng Phet, Phetchabun, Tak, Sukhothai and Uttaradit Provinces. The first level of the building displays the collection of rabbit-shaped coconut grater, basketry, lacquerware, small and large water jars, water pots, animal and fishing tools, coins and banknotes and clothes as well as the exhibition on rice plantation.
Third building displays the exhibition on the Song tribe, also known as the Lao Song and Tai Song Dam as well as the case study of the Song from Baan Laem Makha, Bang Rakam District, Phitsanulok Province who emigrated from Phetchaburi and Ratchaburi Provinces. The exhibition illustrates these people’s lifestyle and tradition, for instance, the “Sen Ruen” Ceremony (sacrificial rite for ancestors’ spirits) and the “Kin Long” Ceremony or the Song’s Wedding Ceremony.
Apart from the three exhibition buildings, the museum is also equipped with the storage where the collection of tools is housed. Natural substances such as various types of stones, animal fossils and horns, ancient Thai medicine and traditional medical appliance are displayed here as well.
