The Jim Thompson’s house is a Thai house owned by James H.W. Thompson, an American entrepreneur who founded the world renowned Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company .
In 1967, Jim Thompson went on holiday at the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia. There he set out for a walk in the surrounding jungle and never returned, thus, marked the beginning of the Jim Thompson legend.
The house is a combination of 6 traditional Thai-style teak-wooden houses, that were purchased from several owners from various parts of Thailand, and brought to the present location. In addition, there are displays of antique, artifacts and collection of Contemporary arts, predominantly of Asian-origin art works, which can be broadly classified into 4 main categories;
- Sculptures
- Paintings
- Porcelain and painted pottery
- Other collectible items
In 1976, the court-appointed administrator for the property of Jim Thompson received official permission from the Thai government to establish a “James H.W. Thompson foundation”. By virtue of the dictates of its charter, the Foundation is commits itself to the preservation and conservation of Thai cultural heritage, and therefore, are supported by many project research sponsorships to drive the objectives of foundation.
