Information
Komol Antique Textile Museum was founded by Mr. Komol Panichpun, an antique textile collector of Ampher Long. Mr. Komol started the early collection with different Muang Long textiles and those of the nearby communities. One day he decided to co-operate with Non-formal education Prae, and so jointly they set up the Local Technology Centre, offering courses on textiles, and in honour of H.M. the Queen on the occasion of her 72th Birthday Anniversary, in 1992. After that on August 1992, it was the opening for the general public of Komol Antique Textile Museum.
The museum comprises 5 sections.
Section I is devoted to the Vieng Ta paintings, works of the old timer artisans and which actually are the tempera paintings done on several wood planks that made up house walls. These paintings that used to be in Wat Ta Mon in Ampher Long, Prae Province, have been restored and moved to the Mae Fah Luang Farm in Chiangrai Province. These works of art in the typical Nan style very clearly illustrate the ladies’ garments of Muang Long.
Seciton II is the antique textiles of Muang Long. The teen jok sin or the long tube skirts are displayed. They were the work of the Thai Yonok groups with designs similar to Vieng Ta paintings. Very little in the Muang Long history can clarify them more. The best one could go back to is the legend of weaving told over time by old folks. So goes the story that underneath in the Mae Yom riverbed there once was a cave called Wang Nam or a deep pool (now in Tambon Pak Kang) stretching to as far as Laem Lee. There was a water woman, called “the mermaid” by the villagers, that come up to borrow a “feum” (a loom made with wood). There was a celebration after her work was finished ; there was some music. The mermaid then returned the feum to the villagers, who then noticed the designs printed on its top part with very colourful alternating colours. The people therefore used the loom to do more weaving and could produce those same designs they had seen. The designs were connected and continued until they became the teen jok we see on the lower end of a pa sin, or a tube skirt, typical of a teen jok sin as we see these days.
Section III has the display of teen jok made in different places. Also for the purpose of illustrating the development trend of the community, the teen jok pieces are presented in comparison to each others so that the local people could see the differences, for example, the Mae Jam, the Lai Hin, the Na Noi, the Had Siew, the Ratchaburi, and the Lao Krang teen jok, all made in different places.
Section IV is the illustration of how to preserve the antique textiles by relying on the wisdom of the ancient people that some pieces is over 200 years old age
The last section is the shop selling old-designed teen jok, old textiles made a new, as well as modern clothes and products made from textiles.
