Information
Prasat Muang Sing (“Muang Sing Castle”) is an ancient site located in the westernmost side of Thailand. Influenced by Khmer religion and culture during the 18th Buddhist Century (Khmer art in Bayon style), Prasat Muang Singh was built as a temple of the Mahayana Buddhist. Muang Sing structure is framed by square planning and located on the banks of Kwai Noi River. Sprawling on approximately 641 Rai, 1 Ngaan and 65 Tarangwa, the fence walls of Prasat Muang Sing are built from laterite along the river line from north to south. Entrance and exit gates are located on all 4 sides while there are 7 bordering layers of earthen gutters on the east, north and west. The structure’s fence wall is bent to accommodate Kwai Noi River on the south, resulting in the river serving as the city’s moat. Within the city itself there are 6 ponds and 4 Buddhist structures of:
Archaeological Site No.1 is the main Prasat (“castle”) located directly opposite the gate of Prasat Muang Sing. Inside the castle, its north corner bears a passage for the holy water from the Sacred Statue to flow outside. The pond for the water flow is located on the northeastern base.
Archaeological Site No.2 is the stone castle situated on the northwestern side adjacent to the Glass Wall. Archaeological excavation unveiled a great number of sandstone sculpture bases, such as the Statue of Avalokiteshvara, the Seated Buddha Statue under the Naga, the Statue of Prajnaparamita and many earthen baked-clay imprinted images of Buddha.
Archaeological Site No.3 is a small structure built of bricks and laterite. Located outside the southwestern glass wall, the structure’s lower side is located on the one-tiered pedestal with the upper part made of bricks. This condition could have been a result of repetitive construction. Stone plates are erected at every outer corner of the structure, with the possible purpose to serve as boundary markers of the temple. Archaeological excavation unveiled many metal imprinted images of Buddha with lead-texture.
Archaeological Site No.4 is the ancient structure with its base similar to a 4-room-shophouse. It is a square one-storey building made of laterite and located further from the southwestern Glass Wall.
Pre-Historic Tombs are located outside the fence wall in the south. Adjacent to Kwai Noi River, is the place where the 4 bones of pre-historic men were discovered. There are discoveries of similar tombs along the riverside from Saiyok District to Mueang District, indicating that the indigenous people used to live along the riverside before the construction of Prasat Muang Sing began.
