Founded in 1916 in the era of King Mongkut or King Rama IV, the building was used as precinct administration office of Chanthaburi, which governed Chanthaburi, Rayong and Trat. Later in 1933, the precinct government was revoked. The place was converted into City Hall of Chanthaburi and used until 1978.  

The Old City Hall of Chanthaburi is a single-storey European colonial building which was made of bricks and raised on stilts for the storage of household materials. This 73x27-metre building has a long corridor with façade at the front. There are three arches above the façade that features a pediment at the top. The upper ornaments and ceilings were made of wood. The roof was finished with kite-shaped tiles. There are pillars, eaves and wooden grilles with beautiful carvings. The architecture of the building represents the harmony of Eastern and Western worlds. Currently used as the Chanthaburi Archives of Thailand, the office is responsible for collection and destruction of documents by the requirements of administrative services. The Chanthaburi Archives of Thailand serves as the centre of learning and research of document for regional state agencies, as well as supports the management of archives. Chanthaburi Archives of Thailand also promotes activities, exhibitions and the holding of movies and documentary films related to art, culture, history, way of life and other local movements.
