PHIMAI HISTORICAL PARK is located in the current Phimai town, situated at Nai Muang sub-district, Phimai district, 60 kilometres northeast of the city of Nakhon Ratchasima province. Its approximately area is 2,658 rai.
The Fine Arts Department has undertaken the restoration since the registration of the ancient city of Phimai in the Government Gazzette volume 53, section 34, dated 27th September 1936. Major restorations were carried out between 1964 – 1969 as a joint project between the Thai and French Government. The principal Prasat was restored with the technique of Anastylosis assembling different parts of the structure by dismantling the structure, coding each stone block and then restoring them back to the original place. Furthermore the Department also undertook restoration of all the ancient structures in Phimai and organized a project on Phimai Historical Park which was officially opened by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on 12th April 1989.
The ancient city of Phimai is located in the current Phimai town, situated at Nai Muang sub-district, Phimai district. It is the place of Prasat Hin Phimai, one of the most important Mahayana Buddhist temple in Thailand, dating back 1,000 years. The old town wall measures 565 by 1,030 metres and is rectangular in shape, surrounded by a moat with Mun River in the north and east, Khem Stream in the south and Chakarat Stream passes on the western and enters the Mun River in the north. Phimai is probably derived from Vimaya which appears in the inscription at the door frame of the entrance of the southern gallery. According to the inscription, there is a mention of the name “Kamrateng Chakata Vimaya” and the construction of a sacred image called “Kamrateng Chakata Senapati Trilokayavijaya” in 1108 A.D. Thus, it is believed that Phimai is ancient town that has existed since the time of the ancient Khmer Empire and its communities and societies have continued to develop since then.
