Information
Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC) has a reference collection of marine animals and plants in the territorial waters of Thailand. Originated from the collaboration of Danish and Thai scientists settled during the Fifth Thai-Danish Expedition held at the west coast of Thailand in the Indian Ocean in 1966, the museum was established to collect examples of marine organisms thriving in the ocean of Thailand according to the agreement on academic cooperation in the field of marine biology between the government of Thailand and Denmark in 1968. Phuket Marine Biological Center was established and underwent a series of changes and advancement as it was renamed to Marine Biology and Fishery Institute in 1991 and later to Marine and Coastal Resources Research and Development Institute in October 2002. The institute has embraced the study of mangrove forests in July 2004 and was transformed to Andaman Marine and Coastal Resources Research and Development Center (or currently the Phuket Marine Biological Center; PMBC) on 5 June 2012. Currently, the Marine and Coastal Resources Research & Development Institute is situated at The Government Complex on Chaengwattana Road in Nonthaburi.
The Andaman Marine and Coastal Resources Research and Development Center has been funded by Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) for the construction of museum building with the aim to facilitate the collection of examples of marine animals and plants that have kept increasing every year. Inaugurated on 10 September 1983, the museum was under the supervision of Phuket Marine Biological Center, which was then reporting to the Department of Fisheries. The inauguration of the museum marked the 200th anniversary of Rattanakosin Kingdom and recognised the 15th years of collaboration between Thailand-Denmark in the establishment of Phuket Marine Biological Center.
Nowadays, the PMBC museum operates under the supervision of Andaman Marine and Coastal Resources Research and Development Center, Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The museum has run exhibitions to educate students and the general public with the aim to create awareness and recognition of marine and coastal natural resources. Academic knowledge is delivered in a user friendly way using posters and videos.
