Among 132 gold shops in Yaowarat, which is globally renowned as the world’s most famous place for gold trade, Tang Toh Kang is the oldest gold shop in this neighbourhood. With more than 140 years of experience in gold trade, Tang Toh Kang has started its business since the era of King Chulalongkorn. The late owner, Mr. Toh Kang, whose Chinese family name is Tang, had named the gold shop ‘Tang Toh Kang’. With its prolonged reputation, many gold shops had bought gold from here for reselling. The name of Tang Toh Kang has since become familiar among Thai people. Tang Toh Kang is situated in Soi Wanit 1 in Yaowarat with no branch elsewhere. The 7-storey building of Tang Toh Kang is renowned for its unique architectural structures designed by a Hollanda architect.
Located on the sixth floor of the gold shop, the museum exhibits tools and instruments used in the making of gold jewellery, as well as the history of gold trade. For example, cast molds (block) in various patterns, including symbol, crown, heart, star, castle, dragon, as well as animals, such as horse, goat, rabbit, etc. Blocks in the early ages were made of lead and metal, respectively. There was also an old-fashioned wooden weighing scale, which was replaced by high-definition digital balance scale nowadays. Jars, which were used to store acid solution for the refinement of pure gold, are among interesting artifacts here. The containers were custom made from Ratchaburi Province. Visitors will learn that there are 3 types of acid solutions used for the making of gold, which are nitric acid, sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid. Other interesting items include Garuda emblem, typewriter, abacus, old photos, receipt, packaging for customers that evolved from small paper carton to galvanised iron box to today’s plastic case, goldsmith’s working table with numerous tools, such as forceps, clamp, hammer, rasp, scissors, steel letter, etc.
