Information
Phanat Nikhom is an ancient city dating back to King Rama III, Chakri Dynasty, established Mueng Phanat Nikhom in 1828. A number of Laotian people, leading by Pra Intha-Asa, moved from their community to settle down here with Thai ancestors, followed by Chinese people from the adjacent town of Chachoengsao. Thus people from three different cultures have to co-existed in the same town ever since, and their handicraft has shown the influence of these cultures. With its abundance of bamboo, the district has been well-known for its bamboo basketry and legendary of various weaving skills from their heritage craftsman.
In 1978, the projects of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit's SUPPORT Foundation reached Phanat Nikhom to preserve bamboo weaving technique skills. The objectives aim to conserve extraordinary folk arts and crafts passing on generations to promote better quality of life. Mrs. Pranee Borriboon, as wife of town's mayor, embraced the project and established weaving workshop at her own residence. She put all her effort into searching out and gathering up the community's tradition expertise in wicker-weaving. Today, the project under her son management, Komkrit continues to fulfill his mother's dream, expands the heritage of weaving expertise, and develops exquisite bamboo wickerwork to achieve national recognition.
